After graduation, Kelly started working at for a local children's troupe. To give his shot in acting, Kelly moved to New York. He gave various auditions and landed himself in a couple of commercials.

Then, in 1998, Kelly finally earned some fame by playing Frankie in River Red, the Sundance Film Festival winner. After this role, he played in movies like Man on the Moon(1999) and The Changeling (2008). His role as Detective in The Changeling was highly praised and known as one of his finest work.
