In the 1970s, Thomas worked as a lighting director at the WTTW-TV Channel 11. Later in 1975, he received a Chicago/Midwest Emmy Award for the outstanding achievement for Individual Excellence for his lighting design work for a program called Made in Chicago.

In addition to that, Markle had also worked on a TV series known as General Hospital and Married… with Children.

Thomas was one of the 14 named co-recipients of a Daytime Emmy Award in 1982 for the Outstanding Achievement in Design Excellence for the Daytime Drama Series for his work on General Hospital.

Besides that, he was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 1986 for the outstanding lighting direction for a miniseries or a special for the lighting design for the 58th Academy Awards.

Apart from that, Thomas won $750,000 in the California State Lottery in the year 1990. But he ultimately spent all those money and in 2016, filed for the bankruptcy over a debt of $30,000.
