During his college life, he played football for Texas Longhorns for a season. He gained the award for Most Valuable Player award for his incredible performance. In 2011 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft, he was drafted as the fourth overall by the Cavaliers.

At the year, he was the highest drafted basketball player in NBA history from Canada. In the year 2015, Thompson helped the Cavaliers reach the NBA Finals but lost to the Golden State Warriors at the end. He has also represented his home country in international competitions.
